LEXINGTON, Mass., November 4, 1998) -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTNA, RTNB) and Angel
Technologies Corporation, a privately held, St. Louis-based corporation, today announced
that they have signed a teaming agreement for
the joint pursuit of stratospheric broadband wireless business
opportunities. Raytheon has been working with Angel Technologies since 1996 to
demonstrate the feasibility of broadband wireless services using High Altitude Long
Operation (HALO) aircraft. This teaming agreement formalizes their
partnership to extend these activities into a successful business
venture.
Angel Technologies' HALO aircraft design, called HALO-Proteus, will carry a large antenna
high above the center of a city to deliver very high-speed communications services.
Augmenting terrestrial towers and orbiting satellites,
the HALO aircraft will fly fixed patterns in the stratosphere to
provide metropolitan wireless services at lower cost, with increased flexibility and
improved quality of service. Working with corporate partners like Raytheon, Angel will
deliver a variety of fixed and mobile wireless services including
voice, data and video.
In an August flight test using ground and airborne electronics
developed by Raytheon, the companies jointly demonstrated a record-breaking 52 megabit-
per- second wireless link between the ground and Angels' HALO Network testbed aircraft in
flight.
"This teaming agreement, which follows our recent joint
record breaking wireless broadband network demonstrations, represents the recognition of
the excellent fit between Raytheon's innovative products and technologies and Angel's
entrepreneurial business model.," said Christine Davis, executive vice president and
general manager of Raytheon Systems Company's Sensors
and Electronic Systems segment. Under the teaming agreement, Raytheon will have
responsibility as the prime electronics systems integrator for both the airborne and
ground segments of the HALO network. Raytheon will leverage its extensive
capabilities in complex integrated RF systems and digital technologies to architect the
HALO network. "This agreement will provide Angel Technologies with an excellent
strategic partner for the electronics systems portion of the HALO Network, 8
said Marc Arnold, chairman and chief executive officer of Angel
Technologies. "We are pleased that Raytheon shares our vision of providing ubiquitous
wireless broadband services over metropolitan areas and we look forward to a long and
prosperous relationship." Angel Technologies recently held its inaugural flight
demonstration of the HALO-Proteus Aircraft and has announced an agreement with
Wyman-Gordon Company for the certification and production of 100 HALO Aircraft.
